 Aloeï Historical Dancers, St.Eustatius, N.A.

HomeThe Aloei Historical Dancers St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles Jan 12, 2007
The Aloeï Historical Dancers started in December 2002 with six teenage dancers. The names of the founding members are Minushka Woodley, Rene David, Charmaine George, and Suzette Bryson. Aloei is the Indian name for Cashew. The Indians who lived on the island gave the island this name because of the many cashew trees that grew here back then. These Indians originated from around the Orinoco River in America. The Aloeï Dancers are a group that focuses mainly on the cultural dances of St.Eustatius. In July 2003 the group was privileged to dance at the opening ceremony of the Conference on the Transatlantic Slave Trade, “The Diaspora, makijng of the Atlantic World” in Curacao. As part of our cultural youth group “Promotion of Young Minds” two members traveled to Barbados to attend the International Youth Conference on the Slave Trade from December 1st to December 4th, 2003. Since then the group has expanded from six to eighteen dancers and now hosts an Aloeï Junior group with children between the ages of six to eleven years old. Although not yet professional, this group continues to participate in various activities on the island. In commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery, the group hosted its first Emancipation Day program on July 1st, 2004, with cultural dances choreographed by dance choreographer Ivan Felipa from Curacao. The group performances included the launching of the St. Eustatius Flag and Coat of Arms Ceremony on Statia Day November 16th 2004, several graduation ceremonies and many other cultural activities. Most recently the group performed for Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. ( November 16th , 2006 )
